Aquatic animals can suffer from a variety of pathologies, which can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, environmental factors, or genetic disorders. Some of the most common diseases include: Viral diseases: White spot syndrome (WSSV) in shrimp, infectious hematopoietic necrosis (IHN) in fish, and viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS); Bacterial infections: Columnaris disease, bacterial kidney disease (BKD), and vibriosis, which affects fish and shellfish; parasitic infestations such as ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich), which causes white spots on fish, and crayfish Plague; and environmental diseases, resulting of poor water quality, can lead to stress-related illnesses, such as ammonia poisoning and oxygen depletion.
