Basic Biology-Ethology
Birds, whether wild or domesticated poultry, have specific biology and behaviors:
– They have lightweight skeletons, strong flight muscles, and specialized respiratory systems that allow efficient oxygen exchange
– Their feathers serve multiple purposes—insulation, camouflage, and flight
– Birds reproduce by laying eggs, and their reproductive strategies vary widely. Some species are monogamous, while others have complex mating behaviors.
– Social Behavior: Many birds form flocks for protection and social interaction. Poultry, like chickens, have hierarchical structures known as “pecking orders”
– Foraging & Feeding: Birds have diverse diets, some are seed eaters, others are carnivorous, & some are omnivores. Poultry are often fed grains and protein-rich diets
– Communication: Birds use vocalizations, body language, & even feather displays to communicate. Poultry, like chickens, have distinct calls for danger, food, & social bonding
– Migration & Navigation: Many wild birds migrate seasonally, using environmental cues & even Earth’s magnetic field to navigate.
