Food-Nutrition & Dietetics

Birds have unique nutritional needs that vary by species, age, and activity level:

Macronutrients: Essential for growth, feather formation, and egg production. Most birds require 15-25% protein in their diet
Fat: Provides energy and supports cell function. Recommended intake is 5-15% fat
Carbohydrates: Serve as an energy source, making up the remainder of the diet after protein and fat needs are met
Calcium & Phosphorus: Crucial for bone health and eggshell formation
Vitamin A: Supports vision, immunity, and reproduction
Vitamin D3: Helps with calcium absorption, either synthesized from sunlight or provided in the diet
There are 2 types of diet suitable for birds: Granivores (seed-eaters) that require a mix of seeds, grains, and supplemented nutrients, & Frugivores (fruit-eaters) that
need fresh fruits and occasional protein sources.
